Why Modernize Skilled Trades Education?
A Looming National Crisis
Canada faces an unparalleled skilled trades emergency. By 2034, over 270,000 skilled workers, 15% of the current labor force will retire, creating a chasm in critical sectors. Simultaneously, we need an additional 410,000 to 520,000 construction workers by 2030, a staggering one-third increase in the current workforce.
This isn't just a regional challenge; it's a "perfect storm" playing out nationally. Total gross recruiting needs could exceed 800,000 workers over the next decade. The housing sector alone demands 290,000 workers by 2030, more than Alberta's entire existing construction workforce. Traditional apprenticeship models are simply too slow, inconsistent, and costly to meet this urgent, massive demand, leaving essential infrastructure and economic stability at risk.
